Botox Cosmetic

OnabotulinumtoxinA, also known as Botox® Cosmetic, is one major means to achieve a considerably more youthful look. Botox, an injectable muscle relaxant that reduces facial wrinkles by up to 80%, is very effective at creating a significantly more youthful appearance. Opposing muscle groups control a person’s facial expression, and a skilled surgeon knowledgeable about facial anatomy balances these upward and downward forces to create the ideal amount of lift in the face and subsequently eliminate or markedly reduce unwanted horizontal wrinkles in the forehead or brow or smooth out frown lines in the face and crow’s feet wrinkles around the eyes. Our founding surgeon James Green, MD, is a Certified Expert Injector™.

Most people choose Botox to improve their facial appearance and look younger. However, Botox has other uses as well. For example, Botox is sometimes employed to treat muscle spasms, migraine headaches, and even severe underarm perspiration.

The effect of the injections eventually wears off, and patients need repeat injections. After one treatment for improving facial appearance, the effects are fully visible within 7 days, and these effects last at least three months and up to five months, although results vary from patient to patient. After repeated treatments, the effects are sustained even longer.

Botox injections are very popular in the United States, and according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 6 million cosmetic Botox procedures were performed in 2013. Botox injections are primarily favored by women, who received 5.9 million treatments in 2013, but nearly 400,000 injections were received by men.

In studies of individuals who have received Botox injections, patient satisfaction has been very high. For example, in one 2015 study of more than 200 patients who received Botox treatments over an average of 9 years, 92% were mostly or very satisfied with their treatment. In addition, of the 90% of the subjects who said Botox injections made them look younger, these individuals believed the injections made them appear an average of 7 years younger than their actual age.

Botox injections are performed in our private Santa Fe office, without need for anesthesia or a numbing cream. The needle used for these injections is so thin (32g) that most patients do not find it to be painful. Patients experience relatively minor discomfort from the injections which last from a few minutes to about 20 minutes for an extensive treatment.

If the forehead is being injected, patients often want to reduce the downward pull between their eyebrows. This downward pull is responsible for most facial furrows and also brings the brow down. By weakening these muscles, there is a slight brow “lift”. Then the doctor may relax the muscles that lift the brow a little to soften the overall effect. This result is accomplished with a precise placement of the Botox in exacting amounts.

Similarly, with the lateral part of the eyelid and around the eyes, the surgeon treats a portion of a muscle to get the desired effect, relaxing areas under those expression lines. When treating frown lines around the face, the surgeon adeptly injects Botox to relax appropriate muscles.

In your discussion with your physician at Santa Fe Plastic Surgery Center, we’ll discuss the areas of your face which most concern you. Then the cosmetic surgeon will explain what Botox can accomplish for you and answer all your questions.

The doctor will also advise you that no single solution works to achieve every person’s goal, and other factors about you need to be considered, such as your skin’s elasticity, possible sun damage, smoking damage, your medical history, and the typical changes of aging. Your physician will explore all of these topics during a free, no-pressure cosmetic consultation. During this interview, the doctor will discuss a variety of options to help you determine the best choices for your needs.

Botox procedures require finesse and need to be meticulously performed in such a way that you don’t develop an unnatural or frozen look, which can appear strange or even resemble a “deer in the headlight” or “deadpan” appearance when performed ineptly. People want to be able to express emotions with their face, but don’t want a hardened expression. For this reason, an experienced cosmetic surgeon is the best choice to administer Botox injections.

Subsequent to a Botox injection, some people may experience minor bruising at the injection site, rash, dry mouth, or headache. We at Santa Fe Plastic Surgery Center will go over side effects of Botox before your first injection.

Recovery from Botox injections is rapid and patients are free to drive home shortly after the procedure is completed.
