Botox For Perspiration

BACK TO INDEX

About 3 million people in the United States suffer from primary hyperhidrosis, extreme sweating not caused by another disorder. This condition persists despite the use of strong antiperspirants. Many people have severe underarm perspiration (axillary hyperhidrosis), while others suffer from sweaty palms (palmar hyperhidrosis), making a simple handshake a cause for anxiety. In both cases, individuals may be perceived by others as untrustworthy or undesirable–even “slimy.” Primary hyperhidrosis affects men and women equally. For many people with this condition, Botox injections alleviate the shame and embarrassment of being awash in sweat, and these injections are FDA-approved for adults ages 18 years and older.

THE PROCEDURE

Botox injections are administered in our Santa Fe office, and the use of some numbing cream might help alleviate some of the discomfort. Injections are given in the underarms or the palms of the hand, wherever the patient finds perspiration is most copious. Reliability of the injections may increase with time, and some studies have shown the first injection lasts about six months, while the second shot controls extreme perspiration up to 10 months. Of course, everyone is different, and you may find the injections last a longer or shorter period.

COSTS

Botox treatments of the both underarms or both palms average $,1900.00 for both axilla.

RISKS

You may experience minor bruising at the injection site, and some patients develop a headache, dry mouth, or rash. The staff at Santa Fe Plastic Surgery will go over possible side effects of your injection before and after treatment.

AFTER TREATMENT

Patients have a quick recovery after the injection and can drive themselves home after the procedure. Any lingering discomfort should resolve within a few days. Botox treatments are not permanent and need to be occasionally renewed. Botox treatments for perspiration typically last 6 months to a year.
