Breast reduction surgery can provide much needed relief to individuals whose breasts are too large. The improvements in quality of life can hardly be discounted, as breast reduction can reduce back and neck pain in good candidates. Breast reduction surgery is one of the best, and most popular, procedures because it helps people who have been suffering from the pain associated with overly large breasts. Often, after a procedure, patients’ only regret is that they didn’t do it years before.
The objective of breast reduction surgery is to decrease the size of the breasts and reshape them in order to make them more proportional to your body size. In so doing, not only are breasts more balanced to the body, which improves appearance, but also the reduction in weight can greatly assist with back and neck pain.
- Breast reduction surgery is a viable option for individuals whose breasts are too large for their body frame.
- Individuals who have neck, back, and shoulder pain will benefit greatly from a reduction in breast size, as the strain will be eased by removal of surplus weight by means of tissue, skin and extra breast fat.
- If the size of your breasts is a source of discomfort and embarrassment, then breast reduction may be a good option.
- Breasts that are disproportionate (when one is considerably larger than the other) are another reason to consider breast reduction.
Breast reduction surgery can greatly improve quality of life; it can make you more confident in your appearance, and more comfortable in dresses and tops. Another added benefit of breast reduction surgery is the ability to exercise and even breathe more easily. Individuals who opt for surgery often find that once the strain of the extra weight has been removed, they are more comfortable working out.
A candid consultation with a plastic surgeon will help you determine if you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery. The plastic surgeon will need to assess your skin elasticity and have an honest conversation about any concerns and expectations relating to the surgery. The amount of reduction a patient hopes to see in their breasts will be a factor in how the surgery is approached. In addition, breast reduction surgery must be carefully evaluated for women who are planning on breastfeeding in the future.
Costs & Recovery
The surgery usually takes between two and three hours, under general anesthesia, and an overnight stay is not usually needed. The procedure can take place at the hospital under the condition of insurance paying for it, or in our office. A patient can expect to feel sore and tender for a few days following the procedure and most patients take a week off to recover. In addition, after the procedure, one can expect swelling in the area for a few months and that mobility may be impaired. Your doctor will discuss recovery expectations with you during a consultation.
The costs of the surgery average between $8,000–8,500, which includes your physicians fee, operating room costs, and general anesthesia. In some cases, insurance may pay for a portion or all of the surgery. Our office will be happy to work with you to get prior authorization from your insurance company.
After a breast reduction surgery, an individual can expect breast size to remain consistent. However, a variety of factors including weight gain/loss and pregnancy can affect the size of your breasts. In addition, normal effects of aging will occur, including sagging of breasts over time.
